Wipro Infotech, the OEM arm of Wipro Ltd, has announced the
launch of its Wipro Super Genius 800 gx-p, which incor-porates Intel’s
recently announ-ced Pentium 4 processor with Hyper Threading (HT) techno-logy on
high volume 90 nano-meter manufacturing techno-logy called Prescott, making it
the first Indian OEM to do so.

"The PCs are targeted abso-lutely towards segments of
the market which demand higher performance from existing applications and offers
a stable platform for futuristic appli-cation needs as well. We will be talking
to corporate which require that kind of perfor-mance for the desktop which will
cost around Rs 37,000," said Anil Jain, GM, Personal Computing Products,
Wipro Infotech

Speaking during the launch, GB Kumar, Director, Sales (South
Asia), Intel Technologies said, "We will continue to concentrate on the 2.8
Ghz range, both HT and non HT, for the next quarter at least. Beginning April we
will look to 3 Ghz and above. The chipset support will remain with 865 G for the
next six months at least as we want to offer con-sistency to our
customers".

He also opined that the market was ready to accept HT in a
big way and expected a ‘crossover’ to the technology globally within the
next six months while clarifying that India is relatively lower in the adoption
scale. He also said that the desktop space was not ripe, either in ecosystem or
on the usage front, for 64-bit technology yet.

Replying to a question on the importance of Linux PCs to
Wipro Infotech, Jain said, "The combination of Intel and Windows is the
highest growing in a market that is on a growth track. Linux is not a core
standard for us and forms only five percent to eight percent of our shipments to
specific customer segments who require the same."
