Will Computers manufacture U-Rack server

Chennai-based Will Computers & Communications, end-to-end solution providers, have integrated U Rack-mount design servers under the brand name SMART for co-locating them at major ISP centers. This is in association with Intel, who came out with similar servers of 1U, 2U, 4U and 5U size called the Intel validated servers.

"Intel supplies with the chassis, motherboard, processor, power supplier and Slim/Line CD-ROM drive. We are integrating Intel approved memory, hot swappable hard disk, monitor, keyboard and supplying them under the brand name SMART. Presently we manufactured servers of 1U, 2U, 4U according to the customer demand," said E Ezhilvel, Managing Director, Will Computers & Communications Pvt Ltd.

"The SMART server will replace the conventional server which occupy a large amount of space. Here a 1U server inhabits only 1.75 inches of space." As a marketing strategy the company in association with Intel will host a road show in Chennai during the first week of August. This will be followed by road shows in Coimbatore and Madurai also.

In a recent development the company started to host Web server at VSNL thus getting rid of leased lines, which amounted to heavy cost to the end-user. By hosting a server at the ISP the cost is reduced to 60 percent. "As an initial move we are hosting the server at VSNL since they have the infrastructure and they charge for the space. By using the U SMART server the cost of space for IU is only Rs 25,000. So the customers are greatly profited by co-location and the use of SMART servers. This is a first step towards web-enabled services, which include web hosting, FTP services and email services," he added. Already the company has manufactured four servers and co-located them at VSNL. "The customer has to pay for the space and we will liaison with VSNL. The hosting of the Web server will cost from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 10 lakh depending on the configuration. We will charge them for the server, software, support charges, which include the configuration."
