It's been nearly four years since

Digital, the global storage solutions and devices maker,

entered the Indian market. Considering the strong competition from

other vendors like Seagate and Samsung, Western Digital has done a

good job in pushing its business in India from mere four percent to

35 percent in the storage market in this short span.

“Though we entered India a bit late,

looking back at the past three-four years, we had started at a very

negligent four percent and then moved to 35 percent of the market

today,” Sushil D Bandi, Country Manager-Indian subcontinent

Western Digital. However, the California-headquartered company is

very keen to improve its market share in the Indian market.

“Globally, Western Digital has a market share of around 40-45

percent and we want to get close to that figure in India in the next

couple of quarters,” Bandi said. In terms of storage market size in

India, Bandi explained there is no independent survey or research

study conducted, which can provide an estimate on the market size

here. But quoting a CSC report, he said the targeted addressable

market (TAM) for storage devices in India is estimated around

$1.2-1.3 million per quarter. According to Bandi, the company taps

the Indian market in three ways-channels, multinational

corporations (MNCs) accounts such as Dell, HP and the regional

original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as HCL, Zenith, Wipro

and others.

“The regional OEMs hold around 55-60

percent of the company's business here followed by the channel,

while the MNCs accounts, which are global accounts, are not counted

as part of India business,” he pointed out.

Recently, the company has restructured

India operations as part of Europe, Middle East Asia (EMEA) region.

Western Digital has manufacturing facilities in Thailand and Malaysia

along with a strong global presence with 62,000 employees. Asia

region contributes around 33 percent to the company's total revenue

and during the last financial year it reported $ 9.8 billion revenue.
