Videocon International has decided to employ the traditional IT reseller channel for its Internet Television. Already over 18 resellers have been appointed in Mumbai. The product will also be sold through the company's consumer durable channel and Videocon will take care of the warranty through its 80 service centers across the country.

"The Internet TV would be an ideal product on a dealer's portfolio. This product is priced below the Rs 20,000 range, which means a dealer could easily sell it to a customer who is looking at a Internet interface within that price range," says Nitish Tipnis, Head Internet Appliances and Web Business, Videocon International Ltd.

Videocon is positioning the product strategically in the home and SOHO segment, where Internet penetration is increasing. Says Nitish, "The color TV has become a very popular product. As a result we have 13 million color TV homes. There are about 35,000-40,000 black and white TV owners in the country. And this is the market we are targeting at." He revealed that 20 percent of their entire production of color TVs will be Internet

TVs.

Nitish is firm that the product is not positioned as a competition to the computer. "We are not pitching this product against PCs, because the PC has myriad usage. But the masses want an interface device that will help give them infotainment. We wanted to launch a TV that could access the Net, within the price bandwidth of a color TV."
