VIA introduces new versions of Cyrix III

VIA Technologies Inc, the Taiwan based supplier of PC core logic chipsets has launched its high speed Cyrix processors in India. The 650 MHz and 667 MHz versions of Cyrix III processors are targeted at the educational and Internet value PC segment to further its share in the Indian PC market. The new processors will be marketed in India through Karma Distribution of Singapore, with which VIA had a long-standing relationship.

Richard Brown, Director (Marketing), VIA Technologies Inc, while launching the operations said, "The company is committed to provide OEMs and System Integrators with an economical solution for building competitively priced PCs targeted at value conscious consumers and businesses."

Compared to the Intel as well as the AMD processors that are currently in the market, the Cyrix processors are priced at a lower rate, which would amount to Rs 3,800 and Rs 4,000 respectively for the 650 MHz and 667 MHz respectively, The processors are using .18 micron manufacturing process and feature a 128 KB level 1 cache and support for a 100/133 MHz Front Side Bus. Brown added that inspite of being targeted at a lower segment in the Indian market, the processor can deliver excellent software application and Internet performance suited for education, home and business users. 

Neeraj Chauhan, Manager (Business Development), Karma Distribution said that the new processors are aimed at the value PC segment in the Indian market which comprises of the educational institutions and home users, who are not the high end users of the PC. Additional features include MMX and 3DNow! Instructions for enhanced multimedia performance. He added that the new processors, which have been doing sales of 15-20,000 units per month, are expected to do sales of 35,000 per month with the relaunch. 

Brown added that VIA will soon be launching higher processors such 700 MHz and above and hope to launch 1 GHz processor by mid 2001. VIA had entered the processor business in the second half of 1999.
