TRAI spectrum policy in two-three weeks: Maran

TRAI's spectrum policy is expected to be out in two-three weeks. Informing
this Telecommunications mini-ster Dayanidhi Maran said that added that the
Indian telecom industry will see an investment of $800 million from foreign
telecom majors this year which will be in the area of telecom manufacturing and
research units.

Maran, had met officials from Nokia, Ericsson and Alca-tel in the third GSM
Congress in Cannes. He said that the investment plans will be deci-ded in the
next three months and Nokia is likely to be the first mover in manufacturing
handsets. Elaborating on the nature of the talks he had with the telecom majors,
Maran said, "Alcatel plans to set up global research center on WiMax in
India. Ericsson is going to finalize decision on the proposal of a manufactu-ring
plant in Jaipur by March."

He added, "Nokia will anno-unce location of manufactu-ring facility by
first week of May and that China's Huawei Tele-communications is willing to
start manufacturing facilities in India."
