Touchtel, Tamil Nadu's first private fixed service and part of Bharti Televentures, has announced new combination tariffs for Zipnet DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) for the residential and the SOHO segment.
According to company officials DSL (speed of 128 kbps) is three times faster than dial up where voice and Internet are available on the same line simultaneously. The Zipnet DSL facility is available in three different prices: Gold 128/ Rs 950 per month (including 600 free voice pulses), Platinum 128/ Rs 1,300 per month (including local calls at 25 paise) and Diamond 128/ Rs 1,850 per month (including 1800 free voice
pulses).
Apart from this, the customer pays Rs 1.50 for 3 minutes in the daytime and 75 paise for 3 minutes in the night time, both of which are similar to current usage costs being paid for dial-up access. A one-time registration charge of Rs 1,000 is chargeable for this service.
The customer requires a USB modem to use DSL, which is separately available from Touchtel. Zipnet DSL would provide some value-added services like - e-mail, video conferencing, games with Internet, chat, video and audio streaming, etc.
“There was a general feeling that DSL is like Rolls Royce which is not affordable by the Internet users. But with the new tariffs we want to make the broadband affordable to all household customers. DSL is a superior Internet technology on top of it, it deploys i2i submarine cable project, which has the capacity of 8.4 terabits per second bandwidth, to connect Chennai and Mumbai with Singapore directly,” said K Krishnan, South CEO, Bharati Telenet Ltd.
