Solaris 10 in beta, set for a Dec'04 launch

Sun Microsystems would launch the new variant of Solaris operating system
(OS) in Dec this year. Christened Solaris 10, the company claims that with Sun's
advanced tools, customers can achieve performance impro-vements of up to 40
percent over those built with Studio 8 and up to 60 percent built with Intel
Xeon and AMD Opteron processors.

According to Anil Valluri, Country Director, Client Services India, Sun
Micro-system "Solaris 10 OS is already in its beta testing stage and by the
end of this quarter we will start shipping it."

He added that the pro-minent features of Solaris 10 OS are that it can do
real time data collection and analysis, has fully instrumented Kernel and
production system rea-ding. The built in security solution gives users a right
to manage security as well.

"Solaris 10 reduces admin capabilities by 80 percent. We have tied-up
with AMD for 64 bit computing on Solaris 10 OS," Valluri informed.

Apart from Solaris 10, Sun plans to launch range of new technologies this
quarter that also include Sun Studio 10 software.

The company would inte-grate Java 2 platform with its new edition 5 named as
J2SE 5 (code named Project Tiger) that would be launched next month. The company
is also enhancing Sun Cluster 3 sof-tware that would help red-uce the cost and
complexity of managing mission critical applications.
