The Salem IT Association (SITA)
recently conducted an expo at Sumangali Thirumana Mandapam. The expo
was held between Dec 25 and 27 and was inaugurated by Rekha

CEO, United Computers confirmed that business between Rs 40-50 lakh
was generated at the expo.
All leading brands, including HP, Acer,
Samsung, Dell, Sony and HCL were part of the event. Incidentally, the
HCL stall had the maximum number of visitors and was an instant hit
with the crowd. The expo featured a variety of products ranging from
laptops to cameras, mobile phones, printers etc. The show stealer was
the 'all in one in-built PC' built by Samsung, which attracted a lot
of crowd. T Srinivas of Srinivasa Systems said, “Most people wanted
to know about the latest offerings in laptops and notebooks. Since
Salem is home to many engineering colleges, the crowd comprised of
many college students and working professionals.”
However, S Prakash of Vashini Systems
opined that he was disappointed with the lack of participation from
vendors. He explained, “This was a wonderful opportunity to
showcase products and reach out to people. I think that the marketing
section of the present brands could be more proactive.” When asked
about the problems that the IT market in Salem is facing Prakash
explained, “The after-sales service of most leading brands is not
up to the mark. The products are either sent to Coimbatore or to
Chennai. It would help if they could open up a service center here,
as Salem's market is growing day-by-day.” Prakash also rued the
fact that price difference exists in the market, and has affected the
relationship between dealers and distributors.
However, all in all, the expo was a
grand success and SITA plans to organize the same next year but on a
much larger scale.
