Seminar on cyber crime and cyber law held at Bangalore

The first ever seminar in India on cyber crime and cyber law was held at
Bangalore with an aim to enlighten the audience about the nature of cyber crimes
and provisions in the Indian and International law which have been formulated in
recent times to tackle this new menace.

The one day seminar was inaugurated jointly by BP Inamdar, Minister of
Tourism and IT Government of Karnataka and by H Sangliana, Police Commissioner,
Bangalore.

Inamdar, while underlining the importance of such seminars in enlightening
the people on cyber crime and law urged the need to organize more and more of
them on a larger scale throughout the country. While mentioning about the first
cyber police station at Bangalore, he remarked that the government of Karnataka
had moved in a very positive direction to create awareness about cyber crimes
and law amongst the people.

Sangliana urged the need to license the Internet users and to register their
usage to prevent the number of cyber crimes in the country. He stressed on the
need to have more stringent laws to police the illegal use of the net and to
spread more awareness amongst people about the nature of cyber crime and law.

The one-day seminar had comprehensive sessions by experts on cyber crime and
law. These sessions tried to trace the origins of computing, the growth of
e-Commerce and Internet, types of cyber crimes, their prevention etc. It also
had a full session on the cyber law in India, which dwelt on the provisions of
the IT Act 2000 passed by the Government of India. There was also a session on
the need for evolving cyber law practice for the corporate.

The main session on cyber law was addressed by Pavan Duggal a practicing
advocate of the Supreme Court and an authority on cyber and e-Commerce law.

The seminar was also attended by Haythambabiker Yusuf, IT Advisor to the
Federal Government of Sudan.

While talking to CNS, Yusuf remarked that he was amazed at the level of IT
awareness in India and specially in the IT hub Bangalore . He said though Sudan
and the majority of African nations were far from that level of awareness but
the growth of Internet had been substantial in his country and in whole of
Africa at large. With regard to the level of cyber crimes in Sudan, Yusuf said
that although their numbers had been very minimal in Sudan but his Government
had taken steps by setting up a National Information Center which would also
explore possibilities of framing laws to control the illegal use of the net in
his country.

But, he said that as if now no law to prevent cyber crimes been passed in his
Sudan. He informed that his country was in the process of following an open
policy for setting up IT companies to give a spurt to the industry in the near
future.
