Security, a prime concern for enterprises

Security is just not an IT issue; it is now more of a business issue. This was the conclusion that came out at the panel discussion of enterprise IT forum at 'Dataquest CIO series 2001'. The panel comprised of V Mahadevan, Director, Information systems, Coca Cola, SD Tyagi, ED-Communications, NTPC, Aseem Agarwal, Executive VP, Indiabulls.com, CR Narayanan, IT Manager, Alstom Power India and Rajesh Uppal, GM (IT), Maruti
Udyog. 

Speaking on the occasion Mahadevan said, "Although the company has its disaster recovery plan but still there is a need of a complete security policy." Uppal commented that Maruti has its complete security policy and they work strictly according to it. "It is necessary because we have to deal directly with our dealers which sometimes place orders and want information regarding the status of vehicle."

Pointing towards the security aspect in transaction business Agarwal said, "The security policy is of much importance for us as we are in the business of online trading which requires lot of security aspects". Narayanan said that his company basically deals with engineering and procurement and 80 percent business of the company comes through procurement. "There is lot of data transfer required in this type of business, so to make sure that there is no leakage of data, a comprehensive security document is necessary."

Tyagi pointed out that three main points should be kept in mind before preparing a security policy. Firstly what type of data the company is sharing; secondly, leakage of data and thirdly contracting where tampering of data is possible. He also said, "NTPC is in process of preparing a security policy in association with ENY and KPMG consultants."
