With VAT likely to become a reality soon, Pune-based Seacom Solutions (India) Ltd, a company with a key focus on retail automation and application development has decided to come out with a product for small retailers.

Called 'Smartshop Express' - this is a box back product on the lines of Tally and is targeted towards those retailers who require a system in their shop.

"Smartshop Express is a scaled-down version of 'Smartshop', catering to the needs of small retailers and is equipped to handle the issues involving VAT. It all depends on the implications of VAT on the market and traders. We are still looking at options," said Ajay Agarwal, MD and CEO,

Seacom.

He said that the product development was complete and the product would be introduced into the market sometime in June this year. "We are still looking at various options to market this product. It could either through the channel or the direct route.

There are financial issues involved here," he explained.

The company is closely examining the possibility of a marketing alliance or seeking funds to market it. According to Agarwal, the product would be aggressively priced so that small retailers could afford it.

With a key focus on retail automation and application development, it has also signed up with Pantaloons group as its IT partner. The vertically focussed company developing retail solutions had earlier tied up with Zensar Technologies Ltd for providing retail solutions.

Seacom has also tied up with Trent Marketing of the Tata group for its Westside chain of stores across the country. Seacom would be providing retails solutions for the new hyper bazaar format that would be introduced by the group soon. Here TCS is the implementation partner, while Seacom would handle the front-end solutions, integrating Smartshop with SAP.
