Samsung India Electronics Ltd and India's first dedicated games company India Games Ltd, have announced the India preliminary of the 'Cyber Olympics', which will determine India's delegation to the third world Cyber Games (WCG) to be held in Korea.
WCG has been held annually since 2000. Samsung is launching this in India in a big way starting this year. Samsung's objective of bringing the PC gaming culture to India is to drive PC penetration in the country. The prelims will be held in Bangalore on August 30 followed by Pune and Mumbai. The finals will be held in Mumbai on September 14 where nine national winners will represent India as against 56 other countries in Korea on October 12-18. They also have the chance to share in a prize pool worth $ 350,000.
According to Vishal Gondal, CEO, Indiagames Ltd, "We are delighted to have Samsung as the Sponsor. We in India are trying to convert PC games into a sport. We are expecting to generate overall public interest in PC gaming, which in turn will help contribute to our rapidly expanding IT and the gaming industry. This year's event will not just be a game tournament, but will serve as a celebration of youth culture and as a festival for great interaction among youths from all over the world."
