Red Hat has launched the Tamil version of Red Hat enterprise Linux V.4. The
software cost Rs 1,950.

Red Hat version 4 will now support five Indian languages namely, Tamil,
Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, and Bengali. Speak-ing at the launch, Javed Tapia,
Director, Red Hat India said, "The latest version would enable government
speak to its citizen in their own language. And apart from localization support,
this version would put Linux ahead of other proprietary Unix systems in features
and functionality."

"Local language desktops will play a significant role in increasing open
source and Linux adoptions in India, crossing language barriers and ensuring
that the benefits of technology be made available to rural communities, who
otherwise have no access to expensive proprietary desktop systems that have
interfaces in English," he added.

The Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 4 in Tamil includes productivity
applica-tions such as office suite with a word processor, spread-sheet,
presentation tool as well as web browser and email client. "Localization
would expand business opportunity for independent software vendors developing
applications for education,

e-governance, rural banking, community information centers etc," Tapia
said.

With the recent launch, Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 4 is now available
in 15 languages-five Indian languages and 10 foreign languages. "But, we
intend to localize the Red Hat Enterprise Linux in 13 other Indian languages by
the end of this year," Tapia further observed.

Elaborating further, he said, "Our focus so far had been on the tier I
cities. And with the gearing up of tier II cities, Red Hat would start targeting
these markets too." "Red Hat, besides the government sector, would
cater to the varied groups in the industry/groups such as entertainment
industry, academia and industry in near future," he added.
