Alcatel and telecommunications equipment manufacturer ITI announced the
launch of the second production facility for Alcatel's GSM BTS in India.
The new facility at the ITI factory in Rae Bareli district in Uttar Pradesh,
was inaugurated by Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson, National Advisory Council, in the
presence of Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Communications and Information
Technology along with Etienne Fouques, President of Alcatel's mobile
communications activities.
The first production facility was inaugurated in July 2005 at ITI Mankapur in
Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh, again by Sonia Gandhi. The Mankapur facility is
equipped to manufacture up to 600 BTS per month. The Rae Bareli facility will
enable ITI to double its BTS production capacity.
Speaking on the occasion, Maran said, "The relationship between Alcatel
and ITI is part of our overall strategy to boost our R&D system and make
India strong in manufacturing of technology products. This production facility
will not only help to enhance the telecom growth in the country, but, also bring
economic and social development to the people of Rae Bareli."
"With this enhanced production base in India, Alcatel- ITI partnership
is contributing not only for growth of mobile telephony but also towards making
India a manufacturing hub," said Fouques.
The Rae Bareli unit will produce roof top towers, shelters, and power plants.
The indigenous mobile equipments presently manufactured by ITI, besides meeting
the requirement of domestic needs will also have the potential for overseas
market, particularly in SAARC and Afro-Asian countries. ITI has plans to explore
export market in line with its technology provider.
To rejuvenate its units ITI Bangalore will manufacture CDMA infrastructure
equipment and CDMA handset, ITI Palakkad will fabricate the next-generation
network products while ITI Naini will manufacture optical range of products.
