Political tussle leaves Dehradun in a jumble

The capital of Uttarakhand-Dehradun-is located in the Doon Valley in the foothills of the Himalayas. It is located between two mighty rivers of India-the Ganges on the East and the Yamuna on the West. Dehradun is famous for its picturesque landscape and pleasant climate and attracts several tourists throughout the year. Dehradun is home to some of India's most ancient and elite educational institutions. The IT market of the city however has been in a state of slump for the last many months. According to Arvind Mittal, CEO, RANS Electronics, the market has been doing an average business since the past 2 months. He said, "The market is doing an average business these days. Also because of the Congress and BJP tussle in the city, market has been badly affected." Agreed Naresh Batra, owner, NK Systems. He said, "The walk-ins have diminished due to an increase in the price of the products." Talking about the potential sectors of Dehradun, government and education are the two major drivers for IT penetration in the city. Mittal said, "Dehradun IT market get business from different verticals in different seasons. For example-during vacation, we get business from home segment; when institutes reopen, students comprise our buyers and during year-end its the government who buys the most." The Dehradun IT market has a host of IT retail showrooms growing rapidly in the city. The IT market is constituted of a total 150 registered players, of which around 80 are actively functioning in the city. The IT market does a business of around Rs 3 crore worth business in a month.

HP is the only brand which tops the favorite list of the city dwellers, while laptops is the top-selling product in the city. Talking about the most popular IT association of the city-Uttranchal IT Traders Association (UITTA)-the dealers gave a positive feedback about the same. Mittal said, "UITTA is very active in the region. They lend their ears to dealers' problems and take steps to solve the same. The recent one being the fraud case of Patanjali Computers getting solved with the intervention of UITTA."

When asked about his opinion on how the market would fare in the future, Batra said, "Starting from July-August the market will turn towards better I believe. Diwali must be a promising time this year. " While Mittal cited his concerns about the plight of the Dehradun IT market in the future. He said, "I think tablets will rule the market in the coming time. Intel, Microsoft, etc, will launch their own tablets and the market will be ruled by them."
