No Google support for Hangouts from May 22

Now Google Hangout users will no longer get SMS support. The information comes courtesy from an email which was posted on Reddit that was sent to G Suite administrators.

In the email, Google says that a warning will appear to Hangouts users starting March 27 asking them to switch to another SMS app since SMS for Hangouts feature will soon go away. The email further states that the SMS support will be completely removed from Hangouts on May 22.

The company rolled out SMS support for Android back in 2013 to encourage the use of Hangouts so the users can read instant messages sent over SMS in case they don't have an internet connection.

Earlier this month, Google divided its Hangouts app into two segments - Hangouts Meet and Hangouts Chat. While Hangout Meets can be downloaded from Google Play and App Store for Android and iOS, the Hangouts Chat can be used by G Suite users via an Early Adopter Program.

Hangouts Meet is Google's video-conferencing application , which allows up to 30 users in a single-video call. Users can initiate a meeting with a shared link without creating any accounts or installing any extra plug-ins.

On the other hand, Hangouts Chat is Google's take on other team chatting services such as Slack. The app for teams includes direct messaging like in Hangouts but for teams.

The app has dedicated virtual rooms for different teams and a threaded conversation design for easy tracking of posts. Hangouts Chat is also integrated with G Suite, which means users can share content from Docs, Sheets, Photos and others. There is also search feature for chats with filters.
