NIIT, an Indian IT training company, has lined up a slew of new IT training programs for career seeking youth, according to P Rajendran, Director,
NIIT.

"Our ongoing interactions with over 2000 employers of NIIT students have already made us the "1st choice of recruiters". The feedback of employers will be factored in to new training offerings in emerging technologies," he said.

"With IT becoming all pervasive in Indian industry, youth need to 'know' computers to communicate with others, advance their knowledge, get jobs, and gain an edge in their careers. Today more and more companies are demanding from prospective employees a 'working knowledge of IT'", Rajendran added.

A recent MTV-IMRB consumer research has revealed that the Indian youth consider computers as the 'coolest' career. In addition, a survey of nearly 9000 students in Maharashtra reveals that 48 per cent respondents sought computer education to be made an integral part of the curriculum.

"These new programs will fuel NIIT's market share gain strategy unveiled a year ago. For the last three quarters we have seen NIIT benefiting at the cost of competition," said Rajendran.

Rajendran said that NIIT had increased its market share in the shrinking IT training market by conceptualizing and implementing a three-pronged strategy that included focus on new technologies in the curriculum, brand building and creation of new programs at new price points.

"The primary engine for market share is going to be segmenting the sector into finer and finer segments," said Rajendran. "We introduced 4 new technologies and created 9 new products last year to cater to the specific needs of different customer segments. The number of new product introductions by NIIT last year is nearly double the number that we added in any other year in the recent past while most players were inactive. This led to a 50 per cent jump in enrolments in 2001," he added.

NIIT also announced that it has joined hands with Dr BR Ambedkar Open University to offer quality computer education to over 50,000 students pursuing undergraduate programs in Andhra
Pradesh.
