This global Chess tournament will be kicked off at a grand inaugural function organized by the World Chess Association (FIDE) in association with All India Chess Federation at the Hotel Hyatt Regency, New Delhi. The sponsorship of 'World Chess Championships 2000' is a reiteration of NIIT's commitment to furthering the cause of the game in India.

"We would like to see Chess, the mind sport, reach out to many more mind champions in India and beyond", said P Rajendran, COO, NIIT Ltd.

According to Dhruv M Sawhney, President, All India Chess Federation (AICF), "We are glad that NIIT, the pioneers and leaders in IT education, have partnered us in this world's foremost Chess Championships here in India. I am sure this partnership will lead to further associations that will take the game of Chess to greater heights in India as well the entire South Asian region."

He continued, "A host of acclaimed Grand Masters, international level arbitrators and of course tens of thousands of Chess enthusiasts in the country lend the right infrastructure support and environment for holding this event in India. This event has positioned India prominently on the global Chess map."

Sawhney also expressed his gratitude to FIDE for bringing this global event in India, the country where chess originated. He said, this event would further strengthen the strong bonds that AICF has enjoyed with the FIDE.

Last year NIIT had associated with Grand Master Viswanathan Anand, who is now NIIT's global brand ambassador. NIIT has since then successfully presented Anand as a role model, Indian boy-next-door, which went on to conquer the world. The World Number 2, champion, Anand, will be competing in the World Chess Championships 2000.

Drawing a parallel between NIIT and Chess, Grand Master Anand said, "Chess is more than just a game. It teaches you to concentrate, to think before making a new move, to weigh options, to recognize opportunity and make the best of it, but most importantly, chess teaches you to win. This is what today's competitive world demands from each of us - to be a champion."
