Dolby unveils Dolby Vision 2 with Hisense and CANAL+ as first adopters
Dolby Laboratories has introduced Dolby Vision 2, an evolution of its HDR innovation designed to meet the changing demands of television experiences. Hisense will be the first TV manufacturer to bring Dolby Vision 2 to its premium lineup, including RGB-MiniLED TVs, while French broadcaster CANAL+ has also confirmed support for the new format across its entertainment and live sports content.
For more than a decade, Dolby Vision has been regarded as the gold standard in premium HDR. Dolby Vision 2 builds on this foundation with new image processing, enhanced creative tools, and adaptive features powered by AI. It is designed to unlock the full capabilities of modern displays while maintaining artistic integrity.
Dolby Vision 2 - A next-generation image engine
At the heart of Dolby Vision 2 is a redesigned image engine. Combined with Dolby Vision’s extensive content ecosystem, it enables richer brightness, sharper contrast, and more vivid colours across films, TV shows, sports, and games. With new tone-mapping features, creators now have finer control over how content adapts to today’s brighter, more colourful TVs.
John Couling, Senior Vice President, Entertainment, Dolby Laboratories, said, “We’ve reached an inflection point where TV technology has dramatically changed while artists continue to demand even more innovative tools. Dolby Vision 2 redefines how we think of Dolby Vision to unleash the full capabilities of modern TVs while giving artists unprecedented opportunities to push their creative boundaries.”
Content Intelligence features
Dolby Vision 2 introduces Content Intelligence, a suite of adaptive tools designed to optimise picture quality in real-world viewing environments. Key features include:
Precision Black: Improves clarity in dark scenes without compromising creative intent.
Light Sense: Adjusts brightness based on ambient light and reference lighting data.
Sports and Gaming Optimisation: Enhances motion control and white point for live sports and gaming.
The system also supports bi-directional tone mapping, allowing high-performance TVs to display brighter highlights, deeper contrasts, and more saturated colours while preserving artistic vision.
Going beyond HDR
Expanding on HDR, Dolby Vision 2 introduces Authentic Motion, the first creative-driven motion control tool to deliver cinematic smoothness without unwanted judder, applied on a shot-by-shot basis.
The format will be available in two tiers:
Dolby Vision 2 Max, for flagship TVs with maximum performance and additional premium features.
Dolby Vision 2, bringing advanced capabilities to mainstream models.
Industry adoption
Hisense will be the first TV brand to implement Dolby Vision 2, powered by the MediaTek Pentonic 800 chip with MiraVision Pro PQ Engine, the first silicon to integrate the new standard.
Sonny Ming, GM of Hisense TV Product Marketing, said, “Dolby Vision 2, jointly with Hisense RGB-MiniLED technology, can not only deliver astonishing picture but also increase the potential of TVs with ultra-wide colour and ultra-high brightness, which haven’t been possible until today.”
Meanwhile, CANAL+ has become the first media and entertainment company to commit to Dolby Vision 2 for movies, series, and live sports.
Stéphane Baumier, Chief Technology Officer, CANAL+, said, “This partnership with Dolby reflects CANAL+’s pioneering spirit of innovation. Our commitment to delivering an unparalleled viewing experience to our subscribers remains unwavering. With the launch of Dolby Vision 2 across movies, series, and live sports, that experience reaches new heights.”
