QLC NAND - Micron Technology

Micron Technology has started large-scale production of its 232-layer QLC NAND and is now shipping it in some Crucial SSDs. This product is also being produced in large quantities for enterprise storage customers and is being tested by OEM PC manufacturers in the Micron 2500 NMVe SSD.

The 232-layer QLC NAND from Micron offers improved performance for different storage needs, including mobile devices, personal computers, edge computing, and data centers. Reportedly, It has the following features:

  • It is more compact than other recent products.
  • It has faster data transfer speeds, which are 50% faster than the previous version.
  • It reads data 24% faster than the previous version.
  • It programs data 31% faster than the previous version.

Bill Cerreta from Pure Storage mentioned that Micron’s 232-layer QLC NAND is crucial for their DirectFlash Module. He said that this technology helps Pure Storage move closer to its goal of replacing all HDDs in data centers by 2028.

The Micron 2500 Client SSD is designed for everyday computer use and offers high performance. It is the first QLC-based client NVMe SSD with the most layers of NAND. The Micron 2500 SSD is also the first client SSD to use more than 200 layers of QLC NAND.

Joe Macri from AMD expressed that they are pleased with the Micron 2500 SSD and plan to use it in their mainstream storage options. He believes it works well with AMD’s Ryzen processors.

The Micron 2500 SSD provides a better user experience than other SSDs and sets a new standard for productivity in daily computer tasks. It has shown better performance in the PCMark 10 experience benchmark, outperforming other SSDs in its category by up to 45%.
