Mumbai Police get stern over counterfeiting

Counterfeiting is a menace that has been plaguing the Indian IT market for long. In order to curb the threat, major vendors are being forced to rope in private agencies like Enforcers of Intellectual Property Rights (EIPR) to keep a check on such incidents. EIPR officials along with Mumbai police recently conducted raids and seized counterfeit products of Canon, HP, Samsung, and Brother.

To control the duplicity and uncover the racket, above mentioned vendors hired EIPR, to track down where these duplicate products are being sold in the country, which helped to capture people involved in making duplicate branded products.

L T Marg Police on October 12, arrested two persons, who were running a shop at Moti Bhavan, Dr. Atamaram Merchant Road, Bhuleshwar and selling duplicate products of big brands like Canon, HP, Samsung and Brother. Total value of the seized material was around Rs. 12,19,290/-. Comparing its cost with original packs, the material can be valued in crores, said a security agency official involved in the raid.

Devji Patel (48) and Nilesh Rajput (20) have been arrested and FIR 14/2012 Dated 12/10/2012 U/s. 51, 63 of Copyright Act have been lodged against the accused however, Pravin Patel has gone absconding. The operation was given authority by Krishna Prakash, Additional Commissioner of Police, South Region, and it was conducted by Hegde, Police Sub Inspector and staff of L T Marg Police Station aprt from EIPR supervisory official included B.G. Gaikwad, Ramesh Kadam and Haribhau R. Shere.
