Chennai-based Midas Communication Technologies, a telephony and Internet network product development company, has announced the commissioning of its CorDECT Wireless Local Loop (WLL) system at Paragominas in Brazil, by Nortelpa, a mini-mirror telecom service provider. The mini-mirror licensing scheme was introduced by the Brazil government to provide telephony and related services to semi-urban and rural communities and is licensed to various operators like Nortelpa. The order for the CorDECT system is worth $2.2 million, for providing 10,000 lines, and to be implemented over the next six months in nine cities of Brazil.

"With the successful commissioning of CorDECT, Midas will cater to the needs of many more such mini-mirror operators in Brazil. CorDECT was chosen by the Brazil government because it is capable of providing both voice and Internet and is the most cost-effective solution both in terms of capital expenditure and recurring operating exenses to run the system," says Shirish Purohit, Director, Midas Communication Technologies Pvt Ltd.

The commissioning of the CorDECT WLL system in Brazil involved the manufacture, supply installation, commissioning and training by Midas. Midas will also maintain the system for an initial six-month period. The telephone exchange provides telecom services to a population of about 70,000 at Paragominas. The coverage has been extended by 15 kms using a relay base station.
