Midas Communications, a Chennai based telephony and
Internet network product development company was conferred the National Award
for successful commercialization of indigenous technology by the Technology
Development Board, Government of India. This award acknowledges
commercialization of corDECT, an advanced Wireless Access System jointly
developed by Midas and Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
This award was set up by the Technology Development
Board with a view to provide synergetic partnership between industry and
R&D, and consists of two National awards for commercial application of
home-grown technology. First, to those industrial concerns which successfully
commercialized indigenous technology and the developers/ providers of such
technology. And second to a SSI unit, which has successfully commercialized a
product, based on indigenous technology.
Midas came under the second category and received a cash
award for Rs 2 lakh.
Krishna Kant, VP, India presented the award to Shirish
Purohit, Director, Midas Communications Technology (P) Ltd at a function
organized in capital to commemorate the Technology Day. "This award has
come as a recognition of our efforts to provide affordable Internet and
telephony facility in the country and other developing countries", said
Purohit. "I would like to attribute the success of corDECT to the joint
effort of all our employees and the Tenet Group of IIT Madras. This is a proud
moment for all of us."
Atal Behari Vajpayee, PM, India instituted the award in
1998 and then onwards May 11th is officially celebrated as the Technology Day.
