Microsoft said that it plans to set up a software
development center in Taiwan at the end of April to help the independent
software firms in Taiwan to develop application software or related services by
utilizing Microsoft's platform and resources. The news is expected to be
officially announced by Kevin Turner, COO of Microsoft, when he visits Taiwan in
late April. Microsoft officially set up Microsoft Technology Center (MTC) at the
end of 2003, which is different from the software development center, to provide
the technology supports of R&D and the testing of the software and hardware
that they are planning to launch in the market. Currently there are MTCs in
several countries including the US, Britain, Germany, Japan, mainland China and
Taiwan. Microsoft announced at the establishment of MTC in Taiwan that the
company had planned to invest NT$550 million in R&D in Taiwan in three
years.
