It's a Black Wednesday for IBMmers in India. According to a news report in WRAL Tech Wire, it states that IBM's $ 1 bn rebalancing strategy as indicated by its CFO few months back has hit Indian shores first in the form of massive layoffs.
The ongoing layoffs are described as a ‘slaughter' by employees in India according to unconfirmed sources. The worst hit seems to be the Systems and Technology Group (STG) in India. It may be recalled last month Lenovo acquired IBM's x 86 business for $2.3 bn.
What's left with IBM's STG now is its UNIX (AIX) System P business.
DATAQUEST reached out to IBM India spokesperson on this development but she refused to comment on the development right now. But some of the sources privy to the development confirmed that layoffs in sizeable scale have happened.
Reports suggest that the whole downsizing was called as ‘Project Apollo'. Unconfirmed reports suggest that IBM globally is expected to cut around 13,000 of its 434,000 employees. But India has the largest number of employees and its estimated IBM employs around 150,000 in India alone.
Its operations are humongous here in India cutting across all divisions.
