Mahindra JV with Griffon to produce airborne weather radars in India

Mahindra Group has established a clear lead in Indian industrial groups in the aerospace and defense arena by expanding its venture with telephonic corporation, a Griffon company. Mahindra Telephonics Integrated Systems (MTIS) is the joint venture initiated by both the companies which is the first private sector entity to produce Airborne Weather Radars in India.

With the capability to manufacture airborne radars, MTIS has positioned itself to support the” Made In India” mandate for the India aerospace and defense sector which would be manufacturing from Prithla, Faridabad.

Joseph Battaglia, president and CEO of Telephonics expressed, “Manufacturing of our RDR airborne weather radar is a key milestone. We are pleased with both the progress MTIS has made and with the support of our joint venture partner, Mahindra and Mahindra.”

“Telephonics’ combination of world-class technology and manufacturing capabilities, combined with Mahindra’s renowned manufacturing, corporate governance and market presence are proving to be very compelling for our customers in the US and Europe. Our joint venture has also begun planning for additional development facilities, including a larger manufacturing facility and the development of an outdoor radar and antenna test range,” he added.

The facility, located in the city of Prithla, a 45 minute drive from Delhi, officially opened on February 5, 2014 and represents an important milestone for India’s rapidly expanding private defense industry. The business will focus on the development and manufacture of leading-edge radar technology.

Initial transfer of technology was for the manufacture of transducers used for both commercial and aerospace applications which was commenced on December 2015.MTIS manufactured the first airborne weather radar assembly in March 2015.

“MTIS continues to make significant progress in its charter to build an indigenous capability to support aerospace and defense programs leveraging the advanced technologies offered by our partner Telephonics.” said SP Shukla, member of the group executive board of Mahindra & Mahindra Limited and group president, Aerospace and Defense.
