Maharashtra government launches fast tracking initiatives for industry

Government of Maharashtra is approving legisla-tion for fast tracking
processes to facilitate the process of set-ting up new industries under the name
of the Special Econo-mic Zones (SEZs) and Specially Designated Areas (SDA) Act
2003. This includes both IT as well as non-IT industries.

The government is identi-fying select zones of Mahara-shtra Industrial
Development Corporation (MIDC) estates and other clusters for getting the same
benefits as SEZs on the lines developed in China.

State industries secretary Vishwas Dhumal revealed that the draft SEZ and SDA
Act has been sent to the president for his approval. Dhumal was spe-aking to
reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of the fourth facility of Zensar
Tec-hnologies in Pune. The draft, which has been approved by the state cabinet,
has gone to the president for approval, he said.

Should the Act be passed, it will be provide a single window for all
clearances and extend the benefits of SEZs to specially designated areas. Dhumal
said that the state government wis-hed to extend the practices of SEZs to other
areas besides MI-DC and industrial cooperative states.

Referring to the e-gover-nance initiative Setu, Dhumal said that government
is in the process of building the newest bridge for business called Busi-ness
Setu. This would include setting up a business facili-tation center.
