After NASSCOM Chief Kiran Karnik, Sumitra Mahajan, Union Minister of State, Petroleum and Natural Gas is another heavyweight to have strongly advocated turning Indore into the IT hub of the state instead of Gwalior as earlier intended by the state government. Mahajan is a five-time Indore MP.
Karnik on a recent trip to the state capital had floated the idea of Indore as IT hub, primarily because of air-connectivity and infrastructure. Quoting newspaper reports of Karnik's remarks and the state government plans, Mahajan has written to CM Digvijay Singh favoring Indore over
Gwalior.
She referred to reports that Indore, Gwalior and Bhopal were being considered for setting up an IT city. She added that it was brought to her attention that the state government desired to develop one of these places as a 'magnet city' for IT and
BPO.
Making a strong case for Indore, she pointed out that the state's biggest industrial area of Pithampur was located near Indore that also had a large number of technical and educational institutions which could supply trained and skilled manpower for software industry, a prime requirement for knowledge based industry like IT.
In addition to infrastructure like good hotels, good manpower, peaceful atmosphere etc, Indore offered the best air connectivity with cities like Mumbai and Delhi and that was where it scored over other state cities, she added and also quoted Karnik in this specific context.
Mahajan referred to the Government of India supported special economic zone near Indore that would further boost to development in and around Indore. A software technology park was functioning satisfactorily in Indore as a major IT center.
She requested the CM to take all these factors into account before taking a decision for development of IT city in the state.
