Microsoft's .NET is the latest technology targeted towards Web services-that can be reused over the Web. The focus is also on making .NET applications-platform and language independent and a must for any service on Web. These applications are intended to run on desktop as well as mobile applications. The applications themselves can be written in, theoretically, any programming language.

Visual Studio .NET, the latest of the MS Visual Studio suite, is a Rapid Application Development (RAD) development environment which bundles MS Visual Basic, MS Visual C++ and Visual C#. The Beta 2 offers 'Mobile Forms' which can be used to deploy .NET application on mobile devices like PDAs, cellphones, etc. With Visual Studio .NET Beta 2, writing a service that can be used on a mobile device is as easy as dragging and dropping components and modifying a very few lines.

VS.NET has been launched in its Beta 1 version and the Beta 2 version for mobile devices would be released by this summer. The release to manufacturing would be by the end of 2001.
