LAN at Kasturba Hospital

Kasturba Hospital of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL)
has put yet another feather in its cap by inaugurating a LAN system at the
hospital.

The doctors of the Kasturba Hospital, along with the
computer engineers of IFX Department have developed their own hospital
management system software. Various different departments and services of the
hospital are connected with LAN along with the supportive areas like pathology,
radiology and operation theatres etc.

SN Roy, ED, BHEL, Bhopal recently inaugurated the local
area network in the medical computer section.

Roy said that doctors and hospital staff should collate the
data generated from patients in the hospital and have links with other reputed
hospitals of the country, and even international hospitals, so that they can, as
and when needed, have discussions take and opinions from each other for better
diagnosis. He stressed that with computers in hospital decision-making mode,
both patients and doctors will have quick access to real-time on-line
information. This way, more time will be available to do other important jobs.

The inauguration was followed by a live demonstration of
on-line pathology reports, where blood samples sent by the ICU unit was examined
and their results demonstrated online for doctors and patients to view.

The demonstration was given by Dr Mukesh Arora, (IFX), and
was followed by an on-line demonstration of central registration by Sanjay
Agrawal also of the same (IFX) division.

Dr Sarla Menon of Kasturba Hospital gave a brief
presentation about the computer work done in stand-alone PC mode, with special
reference to the purchase of drugs, medical stores, billing of non-entitled
patients and patients referred to outside hospital centers.
