Kiran Karnik, Chairman, NASSCOM called for a concerted effort on the part of
both government and the industry to enable disadvantaged people in the country
to get jobs. Speaking on the sidelines of a press meet, he said that it was not
just the historically disadvantaged, but for all disadvantaged sections who
need assistance.

“Reservations have been around for the last 60 years and frankly they there
has not been any major impact,” he said.

“It is both the government and the industry's responsibility to make
improvements in education. The IT industry has done a great deal to society and
has been socially responsible and sensitive on many issues like rural health
care, disaster relief and primary education.” He said that there was a need
to do more.

The industry is in informal discussions with the government to see how it
could a plan to provide education and training across from the basic level in
schools and colleges. Karnik also said that the emphasis should be on not just
scholarship and education, but also soft skills, social skills and communication
skills.

“To do more in the country, things have to be delivered through a
government mechanism to make sure the outcomes are time-bound and result
oriented rather than being a mere symbolic gesture,” Karnik added.
