Karnik applauds TN infrastructure

State governments should try to create better infrastructure facilities along
with IT deve-lopment, as lack of proper infrastructure development acts as a
major hurdle in the IT/ITES development. Kiran Karnik, President, Nasscom
stressed this while speaking at the inauguration of R R Tower III in Chennai. R
R Towers III has been constructed in 16,000 sq ft at a cost of Rs 35 crore and
is the third such IT park of R R Industries.

"India has grown as a major exporter of software and services and during
the last fiscal Indian exports crossed the $ 17 billion mark," he said. He
added that besides exports, IT is being widely used in the domestic market and
parti-cularly the usage of IT by the non-IT companies has grown significantly,
today.

Further, Karnik stated that the software and services revenue in India last
year has been around Rs 1,00,000 crore and currently, the industry employs about
one million people in India.

He also appreciated Tamil Nadu government's IT initia-tive towards building
better infrastructure, which has led to the faster growth for the state as far
as IT/ITeS is concerned.

Speaking on the occasion, Vivek Harinarain, IT Secretary, Tamil Nadu said,
"The Tamil Nadu government is all set to roll out the Tamil Nadu State Wide
Area Network (TNSWAN) soon, which would connect the 385 nodes of the state. A
high-power committee has been formed to look into the networking of all the
nodes, including 206 talukas, which would form a backbone network for the
government applications of voice, data, video and Internet."

"Tamil Nadu government has set up initiatives to build in data centers
and common delivery centers, similar to that of a e-Seva model, which provides
single access points the public for their various access needs," he
observed.

Further, Harinarain said that the state has seen a 40 percent growth in
exports during 2004-05 and exports are expected to reach Rs 11,000 crore as
against the Rs 8,000 crore last year.
