Various tools, scriptures and artifacts form the living history of Jabalpur.

The river Narmada finds mention as one of the holiest rivers in literatures

dating back to about 5,000 BC.

Most prominent of the kingdoms ruling the region had been the Hahayas (King

Sahastrabahu), followed by the Mouryas, Satavahans, Guptas, Rashtrakuts, etc.

Another important kingdom was the Kalchuri kingdom, which was ruled till around

12th century AD. The region was an important center for business and culture

during their rule. Then came the Gond kingdom and the stories of the brave queen

Durgavati, who fought the Mughals, are part of folklore here. 

The famous Madan Mahal was built during their rule. The region was later

ruled by the Marathas, who lost it to the British in 1817. The British too, left

their mark on Jabalpur, through their colonial residences and cantonment. The

game of Snooker was invented here.

Post Independence (1947 AD), Jabalpur forms a major center for various

government and defense institutions like MPSEB, Telecom Factory, Vehicle

Factory, GCF, TTC, OFK etc. There are various structures and places, which stand

even today as a symbol of Jabalpur's glorious and eventful past.

Among the important establishment here are the High Court of Madhya Pradesh

(MP), headquarters of MP Electricity Board and several defense establishments.

Popularly known as the ‘Sanskar Dhami’ (the cultural capital) one had its

claim to be the capital of MP in view of its size and the infrastructure that it

continues to offer.

Jabalpur is on the main railway route between Mumbai and Kolkata and also has

direct train links with Delhi and major cities in South India connected by two

national highways. 

Apart from this, it also has an excellent road connection with Nagpur, Bhopal

and several other important cities of the country. Jabalpur is situated in an

area, which is known for its mineral and forest wealth throughout India. It's

rich limestone deposits have attracted in its surroundings making it an

important business center.
