Infosys Technologies has become Orissa's biggest software
exporter by contri-buting about 80 percent to state's total software export, a
senior state official informed. Infosys started its development center in Orissa
in July 1997. The center had only 56 employees in that year which has gone up to
1,300 and now, it has the capacity to accommodate as many as 2,000 software
professionals.
The Bhubaneswar center of the company is located on a sprawling
space of 46 acres in Info City located at the outskirts of the capital city of
Bhubaneswar. This center is dedicated to create an environment where employees
can learn and grow.
There was a time when IT activi-ties were concentrated at
Bangalore. Software exports from Orissa were less than Rs .25 crore per year in
1992-1997. However, the scenario has changed now. Orissa is also be-coming a
prominent center of such activities in India with Infosys con-tributing to this
trend, the official said. Software exports from the state grew to Rs 4.7 crore
in 1997-98 to Rs 319 crore in 2004. Infosys accoun-ted for 80 percent of this
software export, he said.
