Nasscom, the apex industry body of software and service companies in India, has stressed the need for organizations to devise business continuity and disaster recovery plans, at its Information Security 2002 seminar held in association with the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India.
APJ Abdul Kalam, the Chief Guest at the seminar, released the report on Information Security and Dr. R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Adviser to Government of India and DAE-Homi Bhabha Professor at Bhabha Atomic Research Center announced the launch of Society for Electronic Transactions and Security (SETS).
Releasing the report on Information Security, Kalam extolled the importance of Information Security especially when India is aspiring to be a Knowledge Superpower. Kalam said, "Information Security is not only an enabler of e-commerce and other electronic transactions, but also opens up an altogether new market for our industries to make inroads into."
The one day seminar also highlighted the increased significance for companies to adopt Information Security initiatives at the planning stage itself and consider technologies that provide companies the most effective security whether in terms of cost, service or reliability, in the context of their overall business strategy. Issues related to regulation and policies were also addressed at the seminar and government presented its agenda on Information Security.
One of the key initiatives announced at the seminar by the government was the setting up of a Society for Electronic Transactions and Security (SETS). The eleven member Board of Directors of the society would comprise of four members from the Industry, two from the government, two from the academia and industrial R&D laboratories and two individuals, plus an Executive Director of the Society who shall be the Secretary to the Board.
