SP Summit on
January 29 and 30, 2011. Held in the capital city
of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, the congregation witnessed a mix of nearly
100 high profile solution providers, vendors, and technocrats from
diverse backgrounds. With the theme of the 6th Summit decided upon
'New Age SPs', the event provided a much needed platform to the
industry experts responsible for IT, to freely discuss the ideas,
share experiences and learning amongst themselves and also to do much
needed introspection to better the state of affairs.
Providing a neutral
interactive platform to the SPs, to share and learn from peers, the
stage was also set for informative sessions over issues, that are
intrinsic to the very existence of these solution providers. With
interactive sessions and panel discussions evolving around the theme
of the SP Summit, even the sponsors could not resist the temptation
to focus over this theme discussing the essential qualities of the
'New Age' in the form of their presentations and channel
offerings.
Key discussion points
included focus on new age technologies like cloud computing,
virtualization, infrastructure management, expansion of business in
overseas market; modifying their internal modules like HR, marketing,
and finance to meet their business needs; impact of government laws
and regulations on SPs; and undergoing rigorous process
re-engineering and developing the required skill-sets to deliver
large projects amongst others.
The Summit began with a
brief welcome address by Hoshie Ghaswalla, President-ICT Group,
CyberMedia. Post this, began a stimulating presentation by Ibrahim
Ahmad, Group Editor-ICT Group, CyberMedia in which he talked at
length about the Indian ICT industry panorama, highlighting the role
of the solution providers in the overall growth of the ICT market.
The Infotech Software
Dealers Association (ISODA) also took a moment to discuss the
software double taxation issue with the esteemed dignitaries. Urging
the channel associations like Confed-ITA and PCAIT to come together
for this cause, Rajesh Kothari, Chairman of ISODA said that, ISODA is
optimistic, that all association will come together on software
double taxation issue. Since the scenario around IT software is
complex and ambiguity over taxation continue to prevail, the
government should have a clear understanding on software and a
sensible taxation is required.
Highlighting the
government opportunities for the SPs, Ashis Sanyal, Former Senior
Director, DIT, Government of India, asserted that there is a plethora
of government opportunities that can be explored and banked upon by
the Indian SPs. One area where the Indian SPs can delve deep into the
government sector is National e-Governance Plan (NeGP). There is
potential business opportunity under NeGP for SPs, as it has massive
core infrastructure services like SWANs, SDCs, and CSCs amongst
others.
In the other panel
discussion on SMB opportunities for the SPs, panelists discussed
about the opportunities they see for themselves in SMB segment; how
they are bringing in customized and tailor-made solutions to cater to
this segment; looking at increasing their margins; and as compliance
and statutory requirements is expected to trigger a large-scale
deployment of ERP, CRM, and other enterprise applications amongst
SMBs, how far they are geared for it.
