India’s Napa Valley lacks back-end support

Nashik has got an impressive number of 400-450 dealers functioning in the city, but some of them face service/support issues with their vendors

The third most industrialized city in Maharashtra after Mumbai and Pune, Nashik, is located on the banks of the Godavari river. Often referred to as the 'wine capital of India', or as India's Napa Valley, Nashik's economy is driven chiefly by the engineering and manufacturing industry, as well as agriculture in the surrounding areas of the city. Auto majors such as Mahindra & Mahindra, BOSCH, etc, have their plants there. The city has local established wine brands-'Sula' and 'Zampa'-to its credit. There are five industrial zones in the Nashik area and its outskirts and the city has a number of sugar mills.

Recently, the Government of Maharashtra decided to prepare IT parks in the city of Nashik. Nashik is also emerging as a BPO/IT destination. Currently there is a private IT park named Vascon IT Park in the city. Nashik has also got an impressive number of 400-450 dealers in the city generating an annual approximate turnover of Rs 150-160 crore. Talking about the present market situation of the city, Nitin Gite, CEO, Nice Computers projected a positive scenario and said, "Market is doing good since the past few months. Sales went up." Sanjay Chawla, CEO, San Computek also said in concurrence, "Market is doing good and is going above average at the moment." When it comes to identifying the top-selling products and brands in the city, Gite said that desktop sale have gone up while brands such as HP, Acer, Toshiba, and ASUS entry level mini range products are doing good at the moment. Chawla said, "Notebook is the top-selling product in the city and Sony, Dell, Lenovo and ASUS are the sought-after products."

Talking about the vendor-dealer relationship Chawla said that there are some serious back-end issues and asserted, "Issues are always there with vendors, like support issues and back-end issues. Sometimes there is more than 6 months delay in taking an action against problems. Price leakage is also there."

Computer Association of Nashik (CAN), the IT association of the city, has got a decent membership count of 121 members and is fairly active in the city. Chawla said that the association has improved with time; while Gite said, "The association is 60-65% active in the region. Service issues are being solved by CAN, the association is quite active in the region."

Predicting the future of the market Gite said, "It is tough to predict at the moment, but consumer market is doing good at the moment." While Chawla said that an upward trend is seen in the market and the future looks good.
