IBM launches Software Laboratory in India

IBM has launched a major software development initiative in
India with the opening of the India Software Laboratory in Bangalore and Pune.
The facility is equipped with technology, hardware and software for application
development work supporting IBM customers globally.

The lab will play an important role in IBM's global Linux
initiative, which is part of the company's strategy to ensure open standards and
interoperability. The lab will enhance Linux features, working in conjunction
with IBM's worldwide Linux Technology Center. In addition, developers at the
India Software Lab are working with other IBM research centers, including the
Watson Research Lab in the US to port Linux on wristwatch. The Lab also is
working closely with researchers and developers on file systems and Networking
for Linux industry requirements.

The facility will initially employ close to 500 developers
that is expected to increase in the coming months. "India is a major center
for technological research and application development work for IBM
worldwide," said Paul Loftus, GM, Solutions and Integration, IBM Software
Group, IBM Corporation. "The India Software Lab will play a major role in
the delivery of best-of-breed solutions to our global customers."

The India Software Laboratory is a vital addition to its
existing laboratories worldwide forming an integral part of the market approach.
Worldwide interaction and collaboration with internal partners in research,
development and industry sectors play a vital role in the India lab's
activities.
