On the occasion of ‘Maharashatra Biotech Day’, Maharashtra Ind-ustrial Development Corpora-tion (MIDC) and TCG Urban Infra-structure Holdings Ltd (A Chatte-rjee Group Company) announced a JV to develop, promote and market the 110-acre ‘Interna-tional Biotech Park’ located at Hinjewadi, near Pune.

Minister for Industries and Parliamentary Affairs Dr Patan-grao Kadam supported the ven-ture when he unveiled the inaug-ural plaque. Principal Secretary (Industries) Vishwas Dhumal also graced the function. The park will be the first biotech park in the state to match international standards.

When inaugurating the project, Dr Kadam stated, “The International Biotech Park will be an important landmark in the knowledge corridor which will make Maharashtra a leader in the biotechnology sector. The state will enable and support such projects in order to successfully implement the Maharashtra Biotechnology Policy 2001.”

With a total investment of Rs 250 crore in the project, MIDC will hold approximately 12 percent of the paid-up-capital, while TCG Urban Infrastructure Holdings Ltd. (TCGUIH) will hold the remaining 88 percent. According to the press release, the ‘International Biotech Park’ at Hinjewadi will be developed along the lines of other international biotech parks. It will offer the finest in terms of infrastructure–be it roads, power supply or water supply, and other infras-tructural facilities such as core shared facility, medico clinical research facility, business facilita-tion center, common effluent treatment plant, etc, making it the preferred choice of many bio-tech industries.

The park proposes to have a core ‘shared facility’ at one end and an ‘anchor tenant’ at the other. The anchor tenant, like a medical research institute, will help in developing a larger base of biotechnology companies with its research base and access to patient databases.
