Hitachi Data Systems (HDS)announced moves for expansions into the global SMB
markets. These include starter solutions for SAN-based consolidation and data
backup built on the new Thunder 9520V Work-group modular storage system. The
company introduced the Thunder 9520V that delivers 4.2 GB/sec of cached
band-width-six times that of the nearest ATA-based compara-tive product-and good
conne-ctivity, data availability, and reliability. It will deploy storage
according to a business application's performance, availability.

The Thunder 9520 V sup-ports all management tools and software options that
are available on the Thunder 9500 V Series, such as Hitachi Resource Manager
utility package, which is included with the unit, and the optional Hitachi
ShadowImage In-System replication, Copy-on-Write software (formerly QuickShadow),
and cross-system copy (formerly HiCopy).

In heterogeneous environ-ments, the Hitachi HiComm-and Storage Area
Management Suite provides management through optional application and business

It also supports storage technologies in the Windows server 2003 platform,
inclu-ding Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). Additionally, the 9520V will
support open con-nectivity to Microsoft Win-dows Storage Server 2003-based NAS
gateways to enable file services supported by Hitachi storage.

HDS' partners are also optimistic of HDS expanding in the SMB segment. Bert
Noah, Co-Head of Enterprise Produ-cts Line, Acer said, "By integra-ting HDS'
9520V Work-group Modular Storage system with our servers and storage devices
such as tape, our part-ners can provide SMB/SME customers a quick and
easy-to-manage network storage solution based on our product range."

Liang Jun, GM Server and Storage Business Division of Lenovo said, "The
very strong price/performance and feature rich software options make the Thunder
9520V an ideal pro-duct to complement our stren-gth in the middle and low-end
server market." The tape drive comes with both-rewritable and Write-Once
Read-Many data cartridges that prevent accidental or intentional over-write or
erasure of data.
