The central government is actively considering the implementation of
multilingual domain names under Devnagari and Dravidian scripts to encourage the
use of local languages in the country.
Speaking at the launch of HCL's global integration of ".in"
domain at the HCL office in Noida, Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Communication
and Information Technology appreciated HCL for taking a significant step in
making such a global commitment to the use of ".in" domain.
Maran said that the government is in the process of evolving a roadmap for
implementing of multilingual domain names, which is likely to come up within a
short time. He said that more than .in domain names, .in e-mail addresses would
help in popularizing the concept and encouraging the IT capability of the
country globally.
"The extension of the .in domain name registry service is to symbolize
the Indian identity on the Internet space. Our main aim is to reach out to
maximum number of individuals, business enterprises and organizations to support
them to establish their online presence," Maran added.
The minister said that the system of registration of Internet domain names
can facilitate the proliferation of Internet in a country which has encouraged
many others to adopt liberal and market friendly policies to register large
number of domain names under their country code.
With this launch HCL became India's first major enterprise to integrate its
domain and e-mail infrastructure globally under the .in domain. Shiv Nadar,
Chairman and CEO, HCL Tech said that this initiative would ensure quicker
adoption and establishment of Brand India on the global stage.
Maran also inaugurated HCL's new building, which is the largest dedicated
Remote Infrastructure Management facility in the country.
