On the initiative of Prof Jhunjhunwala, Member, Task force on IT Masses, technical persons from IIT, Kanpur, will visit the tribal district of Dhar, to fix the technical aspects of WLL to the Gyandoot project. Once this has been accomplished, WLL connectivity will become a reality by February 10th, 2001.

It is estimated that out of a total investment of Rs 20 lakh under the WLL project, Rs 13 lakh will be IIT, Chennai's contribution. The remaining Rs 7 lakh would come from the Ratan Tata Trust, Mumbai, which has incidentally also shown its keenness in providing logistics support to the Gyandoot project. Out of the sum of Rs 7 lakh, Rs 5 lakh would be returned after a fixed period.

Once functional, the WLL technology will provide connectivity at 250 client nodes and offer a bandwidth of 70 KBPS. Four towers are proposed to be set up in the district to cover every village under WLL. This technology will also allow STD booth's to function as Gyandoot kiosks through a nominal investment of Rs 25,000.

While about 31 kiosks have been set up till date in the district under the Gyandoot project by the Gyandoot Samiti, the district administration is carrying out a survey within a purview of 35 kilometers of the district headquarters to identify new kiosks.

The WLL connectivity is also thought to be conducive to opening the field for private players in the Gyandoot project. It is also proposed that as a measure to make the management of the project more professional, and to ensure dissemination and absorption of various aspects of IT in the Gyandoot project, an IRMA-graduate would be appointed as an Placement Officer in the project.
