HP-one of the largest selling brands in the imaging and printing segment in India, has stressed upon the need of buying original cartridges and consumables. It has also released the findings of Gartner that demonstrates the disadvantages of the refilled inks and toners of local makers. The company also said that, it will educate the channel partners on the perils of readily available local refill products. Many of the printer OEMs are loosing a significant amount of revenue to locally grown manufacturers in this space.

Nitin Hiranandani, Director-Managed Enterprise Solutions,IPG, HP India said that 70 percent of the processes are performed through printer cartridges, and toner cartridges are the critical part of a printer. The company will install chip on the cartridge and the customers can put its PIN on the Website to know, if it is original. According to QualityLogic 2010 finding, over 60 percent of all refilled cartridges tested were found DoA (Death on Arrival) or of low quality.

“However, lack of awareness, low control over printing processes and assessment leads to problematic scenarios among organizations. They should implement energy-saving solutions and reduce paper,” he said. According to Hiranandani, supplies play a critical and integral part and are important for customers to understand. “We will also educate our channel partners on the multiple advantages of using original refills,” he added.

Ken Weilerstein, Research VP, Gartner said that supply management is the top priority among large businesses, today. “Re-manufactured supplies that are available at 50 percent discount, yield shorter than originals. Some of the problems include image resolution with color and BW paper; get printed the desired copy after reprinting at least five times; and burst cartridge and printing fail far ahead of schedule,” he said. With the alarming rise in the locally available options, the company has come up with the HP 802 small black Inkjet print cartridge, which is priced at an affordable Rs 425.
