HMD launches Touch 4G: redefining the space between smartphones and feature phones

The lines between smartphones and feature phones just blurred. HMD, the company behind Nokia-branded feature phones, has introduced the Touch 4G — a device it calls India’s first hybrid phone. Priced at Rs 3,999, the Touch 4G aims to bridge the gap between affordability and connectivity, blending simplicity with a dose of smart functionality.

A new category for the “in-between” user

India’s mobile market has long been polarised between low-cost feature phones and full-fledged smartphones. The Touch 4G seeks to redefine that middle ground. Designed for users who want smartphone-style connectivity without the price or complexity, it brings together cloud-based services, touch capability, and essential communication tools.

At its core, the device features a compact 3.2-inch touchscreen with a 320x240-pixel resolution. While HMD hasn’t detailed the display panel, the size suggests a focus on usability over luxury.

Smart features in a compact frame

Despite its small build, the Touch 4G packs an interesting mix of capabilities. It supports video calls — a first for many feature phones — through Express Chat, a pre-installed messaging app that allows both individual and group chats. The app also connects seamlessly with Android and iOS users, closing the communication gap between smartphone owners and those on feature phones.

On the camera front, the device carries a 2MP rear sensor with LED flash and a 0.3MP selfie camera — modest, but sufficient for quick photos and video calls.

Cricket, Cloud and connectivity

HMD has clearly built the Touch 4G with the Indian user in mind. Through Cloud Phone Service, users can access live cricket updates, weather forecasts, and trending videos — all hosted through cloud-based browser shortcuts. This feature is likely to appeal to users who want information on the go, without depending on data-heavy apps.

Connectivity options include Wi-Fi hotspot and Bluetooth support, extending its utility beyond basic calling and messaging. It also comes with a quick call button that doubles as an emergency dialler or voice memo shortcut — a thoughtful touch for everyday use.

Built for endurance and accessibility

Under the hood, the phone runs on the Unisoc T127 processor, paired with 64MB RAM and 128MB storage, expandable up to 32GB via microSD. It does not run Android but operates on RTOS Touch (Real-Time Operating System), a lightweight system designed for speed and reliability.

Powering the device is a removable 1,950mAh battery that, according to HMD, lasts up to 30 hours on a single charge. The inclusion of Type-C charging and an IP52 dust and splash resistance rating adds a layer of durability rarely seen in this price segment.

A strategic move for HMD

The Touch 4G is more than just another feature phone. It reflects HMD’s strategy to capture the wide user base that still prefers button-based devices but wants smarter services. The combination of touch interface, cloud connectivity, and video calling could redefine the lower-end segment, offering a gateway for millions still transitioning from 2G or 3G phones.

For HMD, this is a move toward relevance in a market dominated by low-cost Android devices. By blending affordability with selective smart features, the company is carving a niche that competitors have largely ignored.

Pricing and availability

The HMD Touch 4G is available in a single variant - 64MB RAM with 128MB storage. It is priced at Rs 3,999. It can be purchased via HMD’s official website.
