Fraudsters enjoying on your credit card

Online banking in India offers enormous promise both for banks and their
customers. India accounts for around 81 million Internet users, representing a
market penetration of just seven percent. For banks considering the offered
services online, India's potential in this regard seems exciting. Internet usage
in India has soared 1,520 percent since year 2000. But this has led to new
headaches for both customers as well as the authorities.

In the past two years, India lost more than Rs 115 crore to online banking
frauds. The number of cases have more than doubled last year. Fraudsters use
different ways to lure their prey. They send fake job offers and entice
recipients with fictitious lotteries and false promises of several million
dollars in inheritance. They call people pretending to be a bank executive
verifying personal details and try to lure them to part with their internet
banking passwords. In a recent issue, they offered tickets for the football
World Cup and urged people to send them money for visa charges or processing
fees.
