Recently Promise had redefined its SCSI-to-ATA RAID subsystems product line
for network server and workstation storage with its now UltraTrak series from
SX4000/8000 (tower) to RM4000/8000/15000 (rackmount). The bundled Promise array
management utility allows MIS administrators monitor and manage array status via
networks anytime in an easy and remote way.

Promise’s systems supports 48bit Logical Block Addressing (LBA), a method
used with SCSI drives to translate the cylinder, head and sector specifications
of the drive into addresses that can be used by an enhanced BIOS. The Ultra 160
LVD SCSI interface allows HDDs deliver a high capacity of more than 1,000GB. The
technique makes the Promise subsystems significantly cheaper compared with SCSI
RAID or fiber channel RAID enclosure/drive combinations.

The UltraTrak SX/RM series support online array expansion and conversion,
allowing users to add additional drives on-the-fly to increase storage capacity
for any array if initially populated with less than the maximum amount of
drives. The series provide RAID 50,30, 5, 3, 0+1, 1, 0 and JBOD support with hot
swap and/or hot-spare for continuous operation of fault tolerant arrays in case
of drive failure.

A built-in LCD display screen with electronic push buttons allows users to
configure and set-up an array in a simple and straightforward way. The UltraTrak
subsystems employ audible alarms, LEDs and an LCD panel to indicate drive and
array status, including disk access, kisk failure and disk rebuild.

Fortune plans to build the market for Promise’s product through the channel
it already has and has plans to undergo a big marketing campaign for Promise’s
products.
