Follow UsLearn Fun Systems, a Tamil software and games title developer, has launched the World's first Tamil OCR (Optical Character Reader) in the market. Called PonVizhi, the OCR software helps user to convert any bitmapped image file of a printed page in to editable RTF (Rich Text Format) file. The software is priced Rs 7,500 and it is compatible with Windows platform.
"PonVizhi comes with a built-in Tamil spell check software as a value-addition measure," said V Krishnamoorthy, who is the chief architect of this OCR software and consultant for Learn Fun Systems.
PonVizhi is targeted at publishing houses, libraries and other media companies where data preserving is very important. "People can generate more copies of rare books using this OCR," he said.
The `Train' feature in the OCR software prepares system to adjust with different sizes of books, various fonts and multiple styles followed by various publications. "Users can choose different font coding while converting in to RTF file," said
Krishnamoorthy.
The international rights for marketing this product has been given to City-based Valli Software, which is the exclusive distributor for
PonVizhi.
Learn Fun has also recently launched PonMozhi, a Tamil editor with spell check software. PonMozhi comes in two versions - PonMozhi 3.1 light and PonMozhi 3.1 full. The light version is not packed with spell check software and it is priced Rs 399 in the market, while the full version is quoted at Rs 1,600.
"PonMozhi is also an unique spell check software which can search both noun and verb in all different forms of noun and verb in Tamil. Our spell check software gives 98 percent performance result in most of the cases and even 100 percent in certain cases. Moreover, the software is quite fast and accurate in correcting the mistakes," added

The software comes with standard keyboard layout (Tamilnet `99 standards), typewriter layout and transliteration keyboard layout, besides giving an option for users to create their own layout.
