Faridabad is a southeastern town in the state of Haryana founded in 1607 AD by Shaikh Farid, Emperor Jehangir's treasurer.

Located 30 kms south of Delhi, it is planned in a semi circle with the Industrial area along the circumference surrounding the town. One of the oldest towns in Haryana, it is a bustling industrial town, although the district itself is the 12th one to be formed. To protect the Delhi-Agra High Road, Faridabad was constituted a municipality in 1867. It is widely believed that Baba Farid, an eminent Sufi saint, founded Faridabad. Being a project for Pakistani refugee resettlement after the partition, light industrial development was initiated in the town in 1950. Now famous for its tourist resorts, refugees laid down the initial infrastructure of the present
Faridabad.Â

During the period of Akber the great, (1560-1605), the palwal Tahsil of the present district of Faridabad was paragana of Delhi Suba while sub-tahsil of Hodel was part of Pahari Sarkar of Agra Suba. NO major territorial change seems to be
occurred upto the downfall of Mughal empire (1707). After the decay of the Mughal, empire, the area remained disturbed due to the fighting of neighbouring chiefs. So it is very difficult to trace the minute sequence of historical events upto 1803

After the defeat of Marathas in the battle of patpargang, General lord lake captured Delhi and brought the Mughal Emperor, Shah Alam under his control. The city of Delhi along with the neighboring territory known as the districts of the Hisar, Delhi, Karnal and Gurgaon with the presents Palwal Tahsil was placed under the charge of an officer designated as Resident and chief Commissioner of Delhi.

Northern portion of Ballabgarh tahsil was included in the Delhi district when the regular division of Delhi territory was made into districts in 1819. In 1832, the office of resident and Chief Commissioner was abolished and the territory was added to the North-West Provinces. After the War of Independence of 1857, the Delhi territory was annexed to the newly formed Lt.
governorship of Punjab.

In 1861, The Gurgaon district was re-arranged
as a result, Palwal tahsil of present Faridabad district was one of the tehsils of Gurgaon district. On December 12, 1911 when the change of national capital from Calcutta to Delhi was announced, the Delhi tehsil including the areas of Ballabgarh was separated from Punjab and organized into a separate 'Province of Delhi' headed by a Commissioner. With effect from October 1, 1912, in pursuance of the decision to shift the imperial capital to Delhi, the Delhi district was remodeled. It had three tehsils Sonipat, Ballabgarh and Delhi. Sonipat was transferred to Rohtak district and a part of Ballabgarh to the Gurgaon district. The Delhi tehsil including the remaining portion of the Ballabgarh tehsil, an area of 547 square miles (1,457 square kilometers) was made into a separate province.

Upto 1974, no major change took place in the boundaries of Palwal and Ballabgarh tehsils. In 1974, thirty four villages were excluded from the Palwal tehsil. Of these, 31 villages were included in the Ballabgarh tehsil and 3 in the Gurgaon
tehsil.

On the formation of Faridabad district, 98 villages were also transferred to Palwal tehsil from Nuh tehsil of Gurgaon district. Hathin sub-tehsil was upgraded as full-fledged tehsil during 1980. Some other changes took place in the territory of the Faridabad district on December 4, 1980.

PopulationÂ

As per Census of 1991, total population of Faridabad district is 14,77,240 (7,59,727 rural population and 7,17,513 as urban population). The population consists of 8,08,223 males and 6,69,017 females. In rural area male population is 412,556 Whereas female population is 3, 47, 171. The male population in urban area is 3,95,667. Whereas the population is 3.21, 846.Â

The total Number of literate and educated persons in the district as per Census of 1991 was 7,03,869 (Male educated Littermates - 4,81,290 and female educated littermates-2,22,579). Latest census shall be available very soon as the result of the census 2001 would be declared.

Despite having emerged on the Industrial map of India as late as the second five year plan in the late fifties Faridabad is today
the tenth largest Industrial town in the country. There are about 200 large and medium units and 15,000 small-scale units. Faridabad alone is generating about 60 percent of the revenues of
Haryana.Â

The present Faridabad district comprising the Tahsils of Ballabgarh and Palwal was created on 2nd August 1979 which took effect from 15 August 1979. The Tahsils of Palwal and Ballabgrah forming the Faridabad district were part of Gurgaon district

The district is named after the town Faridabad which is said to have been founded in 1607 by Shaikh Farid, treasurer of King Jahangir, with the object of protecting the highway which passed through the town in those days.

Tourist Attractions

Badkhal lake. It is located in Badkhal village, 32 km from Delhi. The lake fringed by Aravalli hills is a man-made embankment. A flower show is held every spring here. It's name is most probably derived from the Persian word bedakhal, which means free from interference. Close to Badhkal lake is the Peacock Lake, which is another picturesque spot.

Baba Farid's Tomb:Â

The city of Faridabad is believed to have been named after Baba Farid, an eminent Sufi saint. There is a also a belief that it was he who founded Faridabad. His tomb in the town is a popular pilgrimage spot for the local people.

Suraj Kund Tourist Complex And The Crafts Fair:Â

Situated at a distance of around 8 Kms from South Delhi, it is an ideal picnic spot. The Suraj Kund Lake here is surrounded by rock cut steps. Built by rajput king Surajpal Tomar, Suraj Kund represents the rising sun. Ruins of a Sun temple lie around the lake. The complex includes a beautifully done-up Rajhans, a pool of fresh water - Siddha Kund
its waters said to have healing properties and a garden.

A delightful handloom and handicrafts fair is held here annually in February. Skilled artisans from all over the country display the rich crafts tradition of India in the typical setting of a rural Indian marketplace. Cultural programmes like folk dances, magic, acrobats and rural cuisines are also a part of this colorful fair. One can also see traditional crafts being made and buy them direct from the craftsmen. Food is served in Banana leaves and
claypots.Â
