Event to take IT to common man

The Computer Society of India (CSI) held its 39th national convention in

Mumbai from Dec 1-4, 2004 with an aim to spread the knowledge of IT. The theme

for the same this year was 'IT++: The Next Gen-eration'. The convention saw

a good mix of making the best of existing tools and tech-nologies and at the

same time openly welcoming emerging database technologies also.

The event was inaugurated by Deputy Governor of RBI, V Leeladhar. Speaking at

the occasion, he said that as time progresses, IT deployment in almost all

verticals is becoming crucial.

There were parallel tracks that had sessions on IT in entertainment,

innovative application and solutions wherein CIOs threw light on application

integration in enterprises and emerging database technologies. There were other

technology sess-ions on knowledge manage-ment and language and speech

recognition and on banking and financial services as an industry vertical.

There were a total of four keynote speakers in the four days of the

convention. Paul Clements of Carnegie Mellon University was one of them. He

talked of software architecture and its importance in an orga-nization. He

defined it as the structure of a system, which comprises software elements, the

externally visible prope-rties of these elements and the relationships among

them.

Talking more of software architecture, Paul said that it provides a common

frame of reference in which competing interests maybe negotiated and exposed.

The other keynote speakers were Amit Mitra, ex-director of NYNEX and ex-chief

Methodo-logist of AIG, Dr S Seshadri, CTO, Yahoo Inc and Subir Raha, CMD, ONGC.

Another feature of the convention was the tutorials that were held. These had

speakers from various orga-nizations like Google R&D, IIT-Mumbai and

Kharagpur, For-tinet, and others.

There were talks on emer-ging new technologies like RFID also. Professor

Sridhar Iyer of IIT Mumbai and Swapnil Paranjape of Persistent Sys-tems provided

an overview to RFID and the internal workings of the technology and the design

of RFID systems. A part of the event was also panel discussions like-'Can

Indian IT organizations take on MNCs through innovation?' This was chaired by

Dr Ganesh Natrajan of ZenSar technologies.
